Year 6 Reading
We love Reading!
Reading is a core skill which is key to children's learning across every other subject. All of our Year 6 children are encouraged to read widely to allow them to access skills and information to support their learning journeys.
Please encourage your child to read every night - and take some time to discuss what they have read with them. Explore some vocabulary that they have read and find the meaning of the words or discuss why the author has chosen those specific phrases. Most of the children in Year 6 can read fluently however, understanding the content can prove more challenging. For example, in addition to discussing the events in a fiction text, some useful questions to ask could be: 'Can you find a word similar to...?' 'Can you find a clue on the page to show us the character is angry?'
Children will not read to an adult every day in Year 6 and therefore your role supporting their progress is essential. Please record the pages you have read together, any new vocabulary discussed and your initials in the reading diary, each day.
Please see the 'Reading with your child' page for discussion ideas.
