Eco Council

At Sherwood, we are passionate about addressing environmental issues throughout our school.  We believe that an eco-school encourages teamwork and helps create a better understanding of environmental issues.

Eco Warrior Pupil Forum meeting Friday 12th December

The children met this Friday for their second meeting as Eco council representatives with Mr Stanton giving an update on some of the items discussed at the first meeting. Mr Stanton has ordered packs of trees for Wildlife and once they arrive the Eco council will have responsibility for planting these on the field for further habitat sustainability. The children were excited for this development.

We then spent a little time thinking about ways that we can work on improving the school and ourselves with the sustainability pledge in mind. We discussed the use of electricity, recycling and a possibility of encouraging children to car share, walk or cycle to school.

Suggestions

We then looked at the suggestions the children brought from class

  • Recycling using food waste. The children were keen to investigate the possibility of having composting bins. Mr Stanton explained that this had been suggested in the past but has to be carefully considered because of the possibility of attracting rodents and also the problem of wasps in the Summer. We will investigate.
  • House plants in all classes for members of the Eco council to look after. The suggestion will be taken to Mrs Lumb as the children were keen to follow this through as plants were proven to improve Mental health and responsibility.
  • Pet club or Wildlife club - Children suggested having more pets in school. Mr Stanton agreed it would be a great idea in principle but we would have to be very careful when choosing due to allergies and ease of looking after. Something to consider and discuss with Mrs Lumb.

The meeting was concluded by Mr Stanton asking the children to produce some posters that could be displayed around school for encouraging the three R's - Reduce, Recycle and Replace.

Eco Warrior Pupil Meeting Friday 7th November 2025

Mr Stanton held the first Eco Warrior meeting on Friday with the newly elected representatives for the Eco team which this year consists of 14 children. We began the meeting introducing each other before looking at what we would be looking at improving over the year. The children learnt about the Climate action plan, which Sherwood would implement, along with all education settings across the country, in 2026 which would look at working toward net zero and what this meant. Mrs Lumb, as lead, along with Sherwood staff, would look at elements where the school could improve, with the children having an important role in encouraging all children in school to think about biodiversity and ways to limit our impact on the planet.

Suggestions.

As part of biodiversity we discussed actions that were carried out in previous years and then looked at ways we could enhance the environment around school. We discussed the possibility of claiming more free trees from the Wooodland trust and if we go ahead what trees to choose. After a short discussion and vote the children often for trees that would benefit and encourage wildlife within the school grounds.

One of the children made the suggestion of having class plants, each being looked after by the class Eco warrior or the rest off the class. This will be looked into and a decision made.

The meeting was ended with a discussion about ensuring electrical equipment is put on standby when not in use and seeing when lights could be turned off when not in use. Some classrooms have been fitted with automatic lighting which dims and turns off when not in use for periods of time so children were encouraged to look at conserving energy when they could. We also talked about the possibility of contacting external agencies and companies who might be willing to donate animal cheaters and homes, food stuffs, etc. The children were challenged to think of who we could ask and contact and for what.

Sherwood Climate Pledge

At Sherwood, we have a climate pledge. This was written by our Eco-Warriors, in partnership with our elected Pupil Parliament representatives. This powerful message is a reminder to us all to take action to support a 'greener' tomorrow.

It's Up to Us Challenge 2023

In 2022-2023, we set a Sustainability Challenge 2023 for each class. All classes were challenged to complete a series of sustainable tasks. The aim of each challenge is to raise the profile of the small actions that we can take, collectively, that will have a positive impact on the planet we share. As part of our challenge, all classes have received the book It’s Up to Us - a children’s Terra Carta for Nature, People and Planet. The Terra Carta is a plan or roadmap to sustainability issued by His Royal Highness King Charles.

This year, a child from each class at Sherwood was voted by their peers to become part of our new Sherwood Eco Council.  We hold meetings to discuss suggestions the children have recieved from their class mates and try to make a difference to our school's sustainability pledge.  We have a very passionate team who challenge issues and share discussions that have taken place in the meetings with the rest of the children in their class.  Have a read through our meeting minutes to see what we have been focusing on.  We feel it is important that the children understand what the role of being part of the eco-warriors entails and encourage them to volunteer to spread the message of how to help enhance the environment and community we live in.
