Year 2 Painting with Wassily Kandinsky and Wilberforce the Frog

Class: Year 2 Year: 2023 - 2024

The children studied the work of the Russian artist, Wassily Kandinsky with a focus on his use of line, shape and colour.  Kandinsky was famous for 'hearing his art' as he listened to music.  We listened to different styles of music in our lesson.  The children made marks with paintbrushes in response.  He could 'hear the colours' and the class discussed why they chose certain colours, shapes and lines suggested to them by the music.  They enjoyed recording their observations in their sketchbooks.

The children responded to the story, Wilberforce the Frog, to paint from their imagination.  They demonstrated careful brush control to paint smooth brush strokes as they invented their own shapes and patterns to represent stepping-stones!
