Spelling

Our aim at Sherwood is to teach the children to develop a range of personal strategies for learning spellings, and for checking and proofreading spellings in their own writing.  Building on the phonics they begin to learn in Foundation, the children are taught how to write and spell words correctly. From Year 2, spelling is taught using the 'Revise, Teach, Practise and Apply' teaching and learning sequence.

We teach spelling to the National Curriculum requirements which enable pupils to:
  • develop a range of personal strategies for learning new and irregular words.
  • develop a range of personal strategies for spelling at the point of writing composition.
  • develop a range of strategies for checking and proofreading spellings after writing.
  • use further prefixes and suffixes and understand the guidance for adding them.
  • spell some words with ‘silent’ letters.
  • continue to distinguish between homophones and other words which are often confused.
  • use knowledge of morphology and etymology in spelling and understand that the spelling of some words needs to be learnt specifically.
  • use dictionaries to check the spelling and meaning of words.
  • use the first three or four letters of a word to check spelling, meaning or both of these in a dictionary.
  • use a thesaurus.
  • proofread for spelling errors.

Spelling Homework

In Key Stage 2, spelling activities will be sent home on a regular basis as an extension of the work completed in school, and will involve exploring a particular spelling rule or pattern, rather than learning a list of words each week. The children will still complete spelling tests in school to assess their understanding, but this may not be on a weekly basis.

Please see the spelling strategies (below) that can be used to support learning spellings at home.

Sherwood Spelling Bee 2018

We are very excited to announce that Sherwood is going to hold its first-ever ‘Spelling Bee’. Every child in school will take part in a series of spelling challenges with the opportunity to win points for their Houses and prizes. There will be a series of Rounds, with Round 1 taking place the week beginning 4th June and involving all children from Foundation to Year 6. Children in Foundation and Year 1 will take part in challenges within their daily phonics groups. The children in Years 2 to 6 will complete spelling challenges in classes, based on the common exception words (Y2) and statutory word lists (Y3 to Y6) for their relevant year group, which they have been learning throughout the year in class. These spelling challenges will help each class to find ‘Star Bees’ who will represent their Houses in inter-house challenges later in the term. Children in Years 2 to 6 have been given their word lists by their class teachers (also available below).
