Design Technology

At Sherwood we deliver creative, inspiring and engaging Design Technology lessons. DT at Sherwood prepares our children to deal with tomorrow’s rapidly changing world. Our children are encouraged to think creatively with materials and work INDEPENDENTLY and in teams to produce high quality end products. Our children are encourage to reflect and ASPIRE to improve their skills and think about the impact of technology on daily life. Our children learn to understand that PERSEVERANCE is key to solving problems. Our DT curriculum supports our children to imagine future uses of technology needed for our world to improve. It enables them to identify needs and opportunities and to respond to them by developing a range of ideas and by making products and systems.

The Design and Technology Curriculum at Sherwood provides for progression in skills and knowledge. The curriculum content covers the following areas:
• Cooking and Nutrition,
• Mechanisms,
• Structures,
• Textiles,
• Electrical Systems.

Our carefully structured Design and Technology curriculum provides opportunities additional to the National curriculum endpoints, to build cultural capital and, through exposure, Design and Technology lessons develop life-skills such as innovation and entrepreneurship, enabling pupils to become well-rounded members of society in preparation for later life. Vocabulary is taught and modelled with carefully planned opportunities to allow all learners to talk confidently and effectively.

Our intention for design and technology at Sherwood is:
 • To create an interest and enthusiasm for designing and making for children of all abilities and develop these skills.
 • To develop children’s confidence and skills in using and selecting a range of tools and materials safely.
 • To develop their knowledge and understanding and combine these with their design and making skills in order to develop their capability in creating high quality products.
 • To reflect on and evaluate present and past design and technology (using a range of reading materials and sources) its uses, and its impact.
 • To help children develop an ability to criticise constructively and evaluate their own products and those of others.
 • To apply the principles of nutrition, basic hygiene and learn how to cook.

Design and technology allows pupils to use creativity and imagination. Pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Collaborative work in Design and Technology develops mutual respect for the different groups opinions, beliefs and abilities of others. In addition, children develop a respect for the environment, for their own health and safety and that of others. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. We value these opportunities at Sherwood.
