Physical Education and Sport

At Sherwood Primary School, physical education and outdoor learning are given a high profile. The school has always recognised the benefits of a strong Physical Education curriculum and extra-curricular activity on raising children’s aspirations and self-esteem.

Percentage of  Year 6 pupils who could swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres when they left our primary school at the end of last academic year?

Percentage of your Year 6 pupils who could use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke] when they left our primary school at the end of last academic year?

What percentage of your Year 6 pupils could perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations when they left your primary school at the end of last academic year?

Physical Education is also a key ingredient in the battle against childhood obesity and encouraging young people to live active and healthy lives. It was for this reason that the government announced in March 2013 that all primary schools would be receiving a sum of money known as the ‘Sport Premium’.

According to the UNICEF Convention on the Rights of a Child, all children have the right to play. At Sherwood we believe it is every child’s right to access Physical Education and that this right is just as important as any other curriculum subject. With this in mind, the PE Co-ordinator and senior leadership team carried out an extensive review of our current PE facilities, curriculum and extra-curricular activity to plan the nest use of the Sports Premium allocated to Sherwood Primary School.

Following the additional PE and Sports funding provided by the government and allocated to Sherwood Primary School in the academic year 2017-2018, we are pleased to share our funding action plan with you. The quality and standard of Sport at Sherwood is very high. We have however taken the necessary steps to ensure that developements are susatinable and have planned to use the funding to further develop the leadership of School Sport at all levels at Sherwood.
